Summary: | The deaths of pediatric patients in the pediatric intensive care unit not only bring grief to
the family but also those to the nurses who provide care to the patients. This situation can effect to
nurses such as health, mental, emotional, social enviroment and work efficiency which may cause
the nurses to resign their job. These effects can be reduced if nurses can cope with grief appropriately.
This research is descriptive correlational research which aimed to study the factors related to coping
with grief among nurses after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit. The samples were
the registered nurses (RNs) who work in pediatric intensive care unit at tertiary hospital such as King
Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, Siriraj Hospital, Thammasat University
Hospital and Vachira Hospital and they have experience to provide care for a critically ill child and
their family at least two days. A proportional sampling was used to select 92 registered nurses in each
hospital. Data were collected during the October Until December in 2019 using questionnaires
including general information questionnaire for perceiving self- efficacy in coping of nurse social
support questionnaire for grief among nurses after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit,
and questionnaire for coping with grief after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit. Data
were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Pearson product correlation coefficient.
The study results revealed that:
1. Coping with grief among nurses after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit was
found that 63% of nurses had a low level of coping with grief. When considering each aspect, it wasfound that the nurse had moderate average score for palliative coping and confrontive coping.
(X̅ = 2.55, X̅ = 2.49) and low average score for emotional coping (x̅ = 1.92).
2. Coping with grief among nurses after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit had
a statistically significant positive relationship at low level with perceived self-efficacy (r = 0.244,
P < .05).
3. Coping with grief among nurses after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit had
a statistically significant positive relationship at moderate level with social support r = 0.348,
P < .01).
The results of this study can provide important information for an administrator to support
nurses coping with grief after children death in a pediatric intensive care unit to prevent further
consequences of grief. |
