Summary: | The vision problem is a health problem in students which can be prevented. Student leaders play a key role in screening vision problems pursuant to the criteria of public health ministry whereby students are required to have their eyes checked once annually.
This study the effects of a Capacity Development Program for student leaders aimed to make a comparison of knowledge and practices among student leaders for visual examination in school through Activity-based Learning (ABL). This learning process consisted of three main activities: explore, find and research activity, creative activity, and self-expression activity. The research was divided into three phases: pre-activity, implementation, and evaluation. The sample was a total of 33 student leaders at Wat Weruwan School, Yang Noeng, Saraphi District, Chiang Mai between February and March 2020. Instruments used in this study included the general questionnaire, student leader’s knowledge assessment form on the visual examination, student leader’s practices form on the visual examination, and the capacity development program for student leaders. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics: t-test and McNemar test. After the capacity development program through Activity-based Learning was offered to student leaders, the results were as follows:
1. Student leaders had higher average scores of visual examination knowledge at school after participation in the capacity development program for student leaders than before the program was provided, with statistical significance (p < 0.001).
2. Student leaders had a more accurate ability of visual examination practices at school after participation in the capacity development program for student leaders than before the program was provided, with statistical significance (p < 0.001).
These findings showed that the capacity development program for student leaders through Activity-based Learning positively resulted in better knowledge and practices of visual examination in school. Accordingly, the capacity development program for student leaders through Activity-based Learning can be further applied for student leaders’ potential enhancement. |
