Summary: | The purpose of this research is to study cultural politics in creating Bhikkuni’s identity. And
the use of Bhikkuni status as a negotiating strategy for positions and acceptance in religious and social
areas. With the main concepts used in the study are Cultural political concept that is a means to usurp
the meaning and create new identity in society by giving new meaning to the operation through the
body through time and space in the life of a monk and operating through rituals and activities which
indicate the status and identity of Bhikkuni in order to be accepted in society. This study uses a
qualitative research approach by interviewing, participatory and non-participatory observation.
From the results of the study, the findings are Cultural politics is one of the tools used to build
Bhikkuni’s identity and relates to how culture is used to justify social unequality and to fight for
change. Resulting in a change of position in the power relations in religious areas, where Bhikkuni
will organize their bodies with "precepts" as a means of determining the practice until Bhikkuni
become strict bodies. At the same time, Bhikkuni use this strictness in negotiating for their position
in the society. In addition, Bhikkuni have established themselves in negotiating through rituals and
religious activities in various situations, with strategies to negotiate in order to have a position in the
Thai society in many forms, including (1) Creating a Moral Subject (2) new interpretation (3) strict
observance resulting from the organization of one's own body through ecclesiastical activities, just as
monks in Thai society practice (4) Bhikkuni’s separation and integration strategies and (5) The ability to communicate, especially Bhikkuni’s ability to preaching and teaching of Dharma, including the
use of modern technology as a medium for expanding awareness in society. |
