Manuscripts in most areas of science are welcomed except in areas such as agriculture, engineering and medical science which are outside the scope of the Journal. Currently, we focus on manuscripts in biology, chemistry, physics, materials science and environmental science. Papers in mathematics statistics and computer science are also included but should be of an applied nature rather than purely theoretical. Manuscripts describing experiments on humans or animals are required to provide proof that all experiments have been carried out according to the ethical regulations of the respective institutional and/or governmental authorities and this should be clearly stated in the manuscript itself. The Editor reserves the right to reject manuscripts that fail to do so. In this work, the wettability of nickel foam (NF) has been carefully examined using the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. NFs with varied wettability from hydrophobic to superhydrophilic have been prepared by various methods including chemical etching, thermal treatment and atmospheric exposure. The WCA results show that the asobtained NF is hydrophobic which can be converted to hydrophilic by either hydrochloric etching or calcining. The hydrophobic behavior can then be restored by moist air exposure. By using XPS, the strong variation of the Ni 2p3/2 and O 1s spectra has been observed and interpreted in the modified NFs with diverse wettability. Our results indicate that wetting behavior is driven by the formation and ratio of hydrophobic (i.e. Ni(OH)2 and organic overlayers), hydrophilic (Ni, NiO) and water-soluble (NiCl2) species on the NF surfaces. The change of surface morphology determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to describe different hydrophobic recovery rates on various samples. These findings suggest that surface analysis is important to evaluate the wettability of NFs. 2020-10-08T08:36:17Z 2020-10-08T08:36:17Z 2020 Chiang Mai Journal of Science 47,5 (Sep 2020), p.1092-1101 2465-3845 https://epg.science.cmu.ac.th/ejournal/dl.php?journal_id=11205 http://cmuir.cmu.ac.th/jspui/handle/6653943832/69916 Eng Faculty of Science, Chiang Mai University
