Effect of denture cleanser containing longan-extract granules on color stability, surface roughness and hardness of a polymeric denture base material.

Objective: To investigate the change of color, surface roughness and surface hardness of a PMMA denture base material after immersion in solution prepared from longan-extract granules compared with denture cleanser without longan-extract granules and distilled water. Materials and methods: Circular discs of SR Triplex Hot with 30 mm. in diameter and 3 mm. in thickness (n=10) were immersed in denture cleanser containing longan-extract granules, denture cleanser without longan-extract granules or distilled water for 10 cycles of 30 minutes. Color stability, surface roughness and hardness were measured before and after immersion in those solutions for 5th and 10th cycles by using colorimeter, profilometer and Knoop hardness tester, respectively. Split-Plot ANOVA was used for analyzing the influence of denture cleanser solutions and storage times on the surface color stability, surface roughness and hardness of PMMA denture base material at a 0.05 significant level. Results and conclusions: The type of denture cleansers and immersion cycle had no influence on the color change and surface roughness. Also the result of surface hardness test of between-subjects effects (solution) and the interaction of both effects were not significant different (p>0.05), but the tests of within-subjects effects (immersion cycle) was significant different (p<0.05). So, Knoop hardness test was not modified by any solutions but decreased over time. The values of NBS ratings which is the way color changes evaluated by the human eye showed that the color change of all specimens after immersion in all solutions at 5th and 10th cycles were çtrace to slighté.
