This study aimed to investigate the possible involvement of NG2 cells under the methamphetamine (METH)-induced neurotoxicity and neuroprotective capacity of melatonin. The results showed that the levels of NG2 in rat brain gradually increase from postnatal day 0 to postnatal day 8 and then the lower levels of NG2 are shown in adults. In adult rats, the levels of NG2 and COX-2 in the brain were significantly increased in lipopolysaccharide treatment. Pretreatment of 10 mg/kg melatonin prior to treating with METH was able to reduce an increase in the levels of NG2 and activation in astrocyte and microglia. These findings would extend the contribution of NG2 expressing cells in the adult brain during pathological conditions such as neuroinflammation.
