Summary:This dissertation mainly focused on the poetic metaphors and metonymies that express the emotions of Jia Baoyu and the First Register of Twelve Beauties of Jinling in A Dream of Red Mansions from cognitive perspective. Among the 207 poems in A Dream of Red Mansions, the poems which contain poetic metaphors and metonymies expressing the emotions of Jia Baoyu and the First Register of Twelve Beauties of Jinling were 122 in number. The study offered a general introduction to the poetry and poetic metaphors and metonymies that express the character's emotions in A Dream of Red Mansions. Then, the nature, construction mechanism, and internal structures of poetic metaphors and metonymies that express the character's emotions in A Dream of Red Mansions using conceptual blending theory were discussed. The study revealed that the poetic metaphors and metonymies which express the emotions of Jia Baoyu and the First Register of Twelve Beauties of Jinling in A Dream of Red Mansions were categorized: poetic metaphors and metonymies about happiness, poetic metaphors and metonymies about love, poetic metaphors and metonymies about sadness, poetic metaphors about hate, and poetic metaphors about pride (or metaphors of gentleman feelings). Using conceptual blending theory and prototype theory to study the poetic metaphors and metonymies that express the emotions of Jia Baoyu and the First Register of Twelve Beauties of Jinling in A Dream of Red Mansions can help readers understand the nature, construction mechanism and internal structures of the poetic metaphors and metonymies better, as well as understand the novel A Dream of Red Mansions more clearly.
