Description
Summary:Qualitative : Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is recommended as the dialysis treatment of choice for chronic kidney disease persons (CKD) persons without significant comorbid conditions or those with residual kidney function. This grounded theory research aims to describe the process by which CKD persons harmonize their lives with peritoneal dialysis. Individual interviews were conducted with 37 CKD person with peritoneal dialysis. Data were collected from April 2018 to January 2019 at PD Units of two large hospital in southern Thailand. In this grounded theory study, data were analyzed using constant comparative and coding analysis methods. We found that "reconciling to the near normal" was the core category. This basic psychosocial process composed of three strategies, maintaining one's life purpose', 'managing existing support', and 'adhering to clinical suggestion'. Factors contributing to harmony in life with PD are 1) desire for independent, 2) fear of complication, and 3) religious faith. Consequences of harmony in life with PD are 1) feel empowered, 2) lessen caregiver dependency, and 3) better health condition. Nurses and renal health care team should encourage family members to support and be involved in the process of harmony in life with peritoneal dialysis. Quantitative : This descriptive research aims to study the harmony in the life of chronic kidney disease (CKD) persons with peritoneal dialysis. The sample consisted of 119 CKD persons with peritoneal dialysis from two hospitals in southern Thailand. The samples were selected by purposive sampling from patients aged 18 years and over, receiving peritoneal dialysis for at least 1month, good conscious and no cognitive impairment. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire consisting of 2 parts: part 1, personal data recording form, part 2, balance in life assessment form with 3 dimensions, namely physical, economic and psycho-social section. Data were collected from April- September 2018 and were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation. The results of the research showed that the sample group aged 22-86 years (x ̅ = 52.91, SD = 13.02) had a high average score of harmony in life ( x ̅ = 2.37, SD = .31). The highest average score is harmony in terms of physical life x ̅ = 2.49, SD = .36) and the lowest average score is economic harmony ( x ̅ = 2.15, SD = 43). It is recommended to promote economic harmony and strengthening the primary caregiver and family to increase harmony in life of CKD persons with peritoneal dialysis
