Summary: | This research aims to: 1 ) study tourism resources with identity of Melayu’s culture in the Songkhla Special Economic Zone; 2 ) provide guidelines for the management of tourism resources with identity of Melayu’s culture in the area. This study is a qualitative research with sample population consisted community, the local administrative organization and related government organisation of the area. The tools used to collect data consisted of the structured in-depth interviews, and focus group meeting. The study covered the special economic area which included four subdistricts; namely Sumnaktaw, Sumnakkham, Padangbeza, and Sadao of Sadao district, Songkhla province. The result indicated that there are seven tourist resources in Melayu’s culture of the area included 1) dressing 2 ) food and beverage 3) recreation 4) festival 5) handy crafts 6) traditions related to religion and beliefs and 7 ) housing. There should be a way to manage tourism resources that are identity and reflect of Melayu’s culture in the Songkhla Special Economic Zone. Guidelines should be as follows: 1) The selection of Melayu’s culture for tourism management as the identity of the community must be undertaken by all related stakeholders, 2) Restoration of some Melayu’s culture which was disappear from the Songkhla Special Economic Zone, 3) Promoting and organizing activities related to Melayu’s culture to maintain in the new society of Songkhla Special Economic Zone, and 4) Issuing Melayu’s culture tourism in Songkhla Economic Zone into the provincial’s tourism calendar. However, in restoring and preserving the Melayu’s culture Malay people in the Songkhla Special Economic Area have to select the appropriate culture and can lead to the appropriate tourism management without conflict with the religious principle and the way it is. In order to maintain the Melayu’s culture in the area should be chosen by the community, either to restore or reconstruct in the global changes. Nevertheless, housing is the most interesting culture left in the area. This is because the southern Melayu’s housing is unique, especially the roof. This includes living spaces that are interrelated with the owner and visitor which could be adjusted according to their personal and social spaces. Melayu housing style is also well suited to geography and seasons, such as elevated platforms, ventilated fountains, and wood carvings. There is also an open-air terrace for hanging a bird’s cage which is the Malay man way of life. In order to manage Melayu’s culture for tourism resources in accordance with the present and up to date, it should take into account of all related stakeholders for preserving the identity of community in order to meet sustainable tourism. The recommendations are as follows; 1) all stakeholders should be involved in the management, so that all sectors understand the awareness and the responsibility to preserve the culture. 2), government organization and local authorities must initiate in organizing cultural activities in line with the religious and seasonal pattern, 3) there should be public awareness about the cultural identity of the Malay community. Hence, Melayu’s culture way is beneficial for future tourism in the area. Moreover, there are suggestions for future research for example; to carry on the lost Malay culture in the past in the Songkhla Special Economic Zone. This should bring back and to study the Malayan culture across the Malayan Malay and Malaysia, the social relationship of Thai Buddhists and Thai Muslims in Melayu’s culture, and changing in land use pattern in the Songkhla Special Economic Zone of Sadao District, Songkhla Province. |
