Summary: | Pare (Momordica charantia L., Cucurbitaceae) fruit is commonly used by people in many Asian countries including Indonesia as food and is also traditionally used to treat diabetes. Previous researches reported that the fruit extract has a hypoglicemic effect and compound responsible for that effect was a steroid. In this research chemical compounds in butanol fraction of the ethanol extract of the fruit was studied. Crude drug was extracted continously using Soxhlet apparatus with ethanol. The extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. Purification was done by preparative paper chromatography and the isolate was characterized by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Several spots were detected on the TLC chromatogram of butanol fraction using chloroform-methanol-aquadest (20 : 8 : 1) as developing system. Two spots with Rf values of 0.29 dan 0.33 gave positive result against Liebermann-Burchard spray reagent showed that the spots were steroids. Two other spots, with Rf values of 0.67 and 0.83 which showed quenching under ultraviolet light, can be used as markers. <br />
