Description
Summary:Indonesia's natural resources are very abundant, including its sea life resources. One of the most-consumed sea products by Indonesian people, beside fish, is clam. Blood Cockles and Scallop Clams are often found in many seafood restaurants. The shells themselves are became useless

garbage. These ignored shells, in fact, are very rich in calcium carbonate that can be used as energizer in pack carburization process. This can be the alternative to replace barium carbonate, which is not environmental friendly.

Clam's shells are grinded to the particle size of < 420 μm. This energizer then mixed up with the coconut charcoal as the carburizing medium with the composition ratio of 10%wt; 20%wt; 30%wt; 40%wt; and 50%wt. Carburizing process is done in 2 hours on 950°C. The next step is hardening process done in 30 minutes on 900°C to get the Effective Case Depth value for each composition.

From the micro Vickers hardness testing with 200 grams load, the maximum ECD value for Blood Cockles is reached in the 30%wt composition with the value of 2,5 mm. Meanwhile, for the Scallop Clams, the maximum ECD value is also reached in the 30%wt composition with the value of 2 mm.
