ALKALOIDS FROM STEM BARK OF ACTINODAPHNE BORNEENSIS (LAURACEAE)

Actinodaphne is one of the plant genus belongs to Lauraceae family. This genus constists of 123 species, distributes in tropic and subtropic region and also grows as shrub as well as 17 meters-tall trees. Actinodaphne is already known to contain alkaloids as a major component. In general, alkaloid...

This genus constists of 123 species, distributes in tropic and subtropic region and also grows as shrub as well as 17 meters-tall trees. Actinodaphne is already known to contain alkaloids as a major component. In general, alkaloids posess physiological effects which include stimulating the central nervous systerm and therefore are widely used as medicines. However, some alkaloids are toxic. According to literature, this genus has been reported to contain alkaloids of aporphine type. One of the species, A. borneensis, is a timber tree and locally known as madang, medang, medang lilin as well as medang rumahan. This species is endemic in the Borneo island and it distributes throughout Sabah, Serawak, Brunei, and East Kalimantan. Up to now, no chemical investigation on the species has been reported. In this research, the isolation and structure elucidation of compounds specifically alkaloids from methanol extract of stem bark of A. borneensis have been carried out. The isolation of the secondary metabolites involved extraction, acid-base separation, fractination and purification using several chromatographic techniques. <br /> text
