THE STUDY ON TRANSFER OF Cs-134 RADIONUCLIDE FROM SOIL TO SWEET POTATOES CROPS (Ipomoea batatas)

Transfer of Cs-134 radionuclide from soil to sweet potatoes crops (Ipomoea batatas) have been studied in this research. The study is required to know the dose that can be received by human if there is a reactor accident or as a result of the global fall out in the tropical climate area. Sweet potato...

The study is required to know the dose that can be received by human if there is a reactor accident or as a result of the global fall out in the tropical climate area. Sweet potato crops were cultivated on soil contaminated with Cs-134 on the concentration of 167.62 Bq/gr. Sweet potatoes were also cultivated on non contaminated soil as a control. Observation was carried out every 7 days for the contaminated media and 14 days for the control media, by sampling 3 plants, soil root zone and soil outside the root zone. The plants and soil samples were dried in at a temperature of 100oC for 3 hours using the oven, and then counted using gamma spectrometer. The results indicated that sweet potato crops have significant ability to uptake Cs-134 from contaminated soil. The maximum transfer factor (TF) value takes place at the second week with TF value of 1,277. The maximum TF value for each parts are root (18,448), tubber (13,153), stem (1,241) and leaves (0,746). Annual equivalent doses were also calculated based on the activity of sweet potatoes plants at harvest time. The annual equivalent doses obtained 0.0185 mSv/year. <br /> text
