Description
Summary:The decrement of wave energy and wave frequency is affected by travelled distance, and the properties of the medium where it travels. This phenomenon is known as attenuation. The attenuation is inversely proportional with Seismic Quality factor (Q) which commonly used for characterize medium properties where seismic wave travelled. The seismic quality factor (Q) could be estimated using spectrum comparison between the chosen wave events with the other wave event as reference. In Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) data, Q estimation were done using downgoing- P wave event.

The purpose of this research is to examine the ability of the spectrum comparison method in estimating Q-factor, using synthetic VSP data. From the synthetic VSP data that have been processed, we obtain QP value as big as 50.5 at 215-460 m depth interval, agreed with the Q input provided. The experiment to observe the effect of certain width of median filter that can be used to separate downgoing-P wave event toward the reliability of Q estimation was also carried out in this final project.
