Summary: | Site survey was conducted mainly to determine the location of seabed hazards in the offshore oil exploration platform area. One of the major activities in the site survey is bathymetric survey. Bathymetric survey as a method of depth depiction of the ocean floor can be done either using a Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) or Singlebeam Echosounder (SBES). Both methods were processed into 2 and 3-dimensional visualization using QINSy 2008, and then compared to one another for their effectiveness in providing depth data for a survey sample area located on Bawean Area, East Java. Because SBES has no visual coverage on the sample area, so the SBES depth data were combined with the visual data from the Side Scan Sonar (SSS) using the Global Mapper v.11. Both survey sample areas will undertake an examination about their effectiveness in object detection capability, time effectiveness, and a review of its operational costs. From the analysis results, it can be concluded that the MBES has the ability to give a more precision coordinate, and a better time effectivity than the SBES-SSS. For the operating cost, SBES-SSS was far better than the MBES. Technically, MBES is the most appropriate tool for offshore oil exploration rig site survey. However, the operational cost of MBES method requires a much larger amount of money, so if the site survey’s technical specification could be performed by SBES-SSS, the survey should be done by the cheaper SBES-SSS combination. |
