Description
Summary:Microcapsule is capsule with has diameter 0.1-100 μm in range, containing active compounds in their structures. Microcapsule products commonly used for controlled release applications, such as drug delivery system (DDS), fertilizers, vitamins, cosmetics and smart textile. Silika was chooses as the basic material template because its behaviour ; biocompatible, can be produced at room temperature, and easily found in nature.

In this study, silica microcapsule manufacture performed by sol-gel method and emulsification (water-in-oil emulsion). Tetraethyl Orthosilicate (TEOS) used as silica source. Span-60 (nonionic surfactant) used transform and stabilize the emulsion, while chlorhexidine gluconate is used as an active hydrophilic compound that encapsulated. Emulsification speeds which performed as a parameter of this process are 18,000 rpm, 20,000 rpm, and 22,000 rpm. Characterization of the samples is done by FTIR, SEM, BET, and UV / Vis. silica microcapsules sizes is influenced by the concentration of surfactant (2% Span-60), the volume of TEOS (15.2 ml) as silica source, and speed of emulsification. From the characterization results obtained the smallest microcapsule diameters size between 0.1-2μm at 22,000 rpm emulsification speed, with 332.6013 of specific surface area m2 / g and an average pore diameter of 28-29 Å which belong to the mesoporous material.
