In constructing horizontal well, determining the direction and the length of the well is crucial. This is due to the use of reservoir simulator that too often makes the ineffective work. This is why an effective method in determining the optimal direction and length is needed. The objective function used is defined as a function of permeability, gas saturation, and porosity. In this thesis, the objective function is approximated by Monte Carlo method. Then, by using genetic algorithm, the optimal solution is obtained. The objective here is to maximize the plateau time. Numerical simulations give the optimum direction and length for different field conditions. text
