Summary:In a smelting process (one process of nickel ore processing), nickel ore is melted in a furnace and forms two layers or sections, crude ferronickel and nickel <br /> <br /> <br /> slag. Nickel slag layer with high temperature then cooled by flowing it into the cooling pond. Inside cooling in the cooling pond, there is the possibility of explosions from nickel slag during cooling process. The explosion could endanger workers and equipment around the pool. <br /> <br /> <br /> To overcome the problem of the explosion, a cooling system that uses a rotary cooler designed. Rotary cooler is a cooling equipment that uses a rotating drum as a cooling mechanism. Nickel slag flowed into a rotating drum. <br /> <br /> <br /> Furthermore, in the drum, nickel slag which has a temperature about 1500 oC in contact with the cooling fluid until it solidified and cools down till the temperature around 60 oC. <br /> <br /> <br /> In this research, rotary cooler dimension calculated to determine technical specifications of rotary cooler and its supporting equipment. Rotary cooler in design result has long 23 m, diameter 3,5 m, rotational speed 4 rpm, and motor power 90 kW. Rotary cooler covered by castable 10 cm thick at 10 m lenght of rotary cooler, started from the inlet. Rotary cooler uses ASTM A516 which has yield strength 335 MPa and ultimate strength 510 MPa.
