Summary: | Mount Sinabung is one of the mountains in the Highlands, Karo District, North

Sumatra, Indonesia. Geographically, Mount Sinabung is located at 03 ° 10 ' N and

98° 23 ' E with the volcano summit is about 2,460 meters above sea level, the highest

peak in North Sumatra . This mountain has never been recorded erupted since 1600,

but in 2010 suddenly Sinabung started spewing gas and volcanic ash. In GPS

observation post, in the area of Mount Sinabung, it was recorded throughout 2011

and 2012 volcanic activity occurs and in the middle of 2013 there was an earthquake

and volcanic tremors, followed by a volcanic eruption.

In order to study the characteristics of volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung, GPS

data from 2011 to 2013 has been observed. This GPS data then be processed and

gave geodetic and geocentric coordinates also its standar deviation as results.

Geocentric coordinates were transformed into the coordinate system topocentric to

observed the value of the shift. The resultant of shifting data and calculated values

are plotted in the form of a shift vector. Then shift velocity and strain were calculated

at the point of observation posts around Mount Sinabung ahead of rising activity.

Based on the results of observations made, the observation point of the strained
volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung, which can be divided into two periods of time.

The first period is January to April 2013 which resulted in compression strain. While

in the second period there were extension strain marks increased volcanic activity of
