Description
Summary:Coal is a fuel with reserves reaching 57 billion tons. In this year, coal production levels reach 275 million tons per year. More likely coal reserve in Indonesia will exhaust in 18 years. However, most of Indonesian coal is a low rank coal that isn’t profitable when used directly as energy source. It is necessary to add value to the product. The downside of low rank coal is high water content so the coal has a low calorific value. This method is often refered as quality improving method or coal upgrading method. One method used often is by reducting the moisture in coal. Common downside of low rank coal is high content of moisture so the coal has a low calorific value. The method to improve coal's quality used in this assignment is an upgrading method. More spesifically, the method to be used is drying method, so the moisture content could be reduced. Coal dryers that previously made lack of some major component, and some need replacement. This dryer equipped with a furnace and the cyclone separator replaced with larger ones in result better separation. Furnace that’ll be used is a simple fixed-bed combustor, it can generated air with temperature at blower's outlet reaching 456,2oC. After the tool working properly, it's performance need to be sought and to determine the feasibility of this tool as a dryer. In the first test, the moisture content can be removed, in the average amount of 3%. In the second test the temperature of coal reached 70oC, the average amount of lost moisture is 7%. The third test shown better performance. By drying twice, the average amount of lost moisture is 12%. After drying, coal's calorific value need to be determined. The calorific value of coal increased from 20219,57 kJ/kg to 22976.79 kJ/kg.
