Summary: | 7-Carboxy chroman-4-one, an important intermediate in the preparation of 3-benzylidene 7-carboxy chroman-4- ones which have antiinflammatory and analgesic activities, has been synthetized through new route of reaction using glycerol and m-cresol as starting materials. Glycerol was dehydrated by potassium bisulfate to yield acrolein. Acrolein was condensed with m-cresol in benzene in the presence of sodium ethoxide as catalyst to yield 3-(3-methylphenoxy) propionaldehyde which can be cyclisized to form 7-carboxy chroman-4-one after previous oxidation. 5-Carboxy chroman-4-one was also obtained as a byproduct. |
