Glycerol was dehydrated by potassium bisulfate to yield acrolein. Acrolein was condensed with m-cresol in benzene in the presence of sodium ethoxide as catalyst to yield 3-(3-methylphenoxy) propionaldehyde which can be cyclisized to form 7-carboxy chroman-4-one after previous oxidation. 5-Carboxy chroman-4-one was also obtained as a byproduct. text
