Description
Summary:One of Freeport McMoRan's subsidiaries (FCX) is P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) which is

a mining company produced copper, gold and silver concentrate. PT Freeport Indonesia was

granted an operating license called Contract of Work in 1967 for a 30-year operating period from

1973. The next Contract of Work was signed in 1991 for the second 30-year period. At present,

mining operations are carried out with two methods: Open Pit (surface mine) and underground

mines. Grasberg is the only one open pit in the district, which was discovered in 1988 and began

to mine in 1990. If Plan-17Q2R3 achieved, Grasberg depletion is at the end of 2018.

Grasberg Long Range Planning Section leads the updating metal forecasts quarterly, despite

of taking care the Grasberg panning itself. In recent years, the completion of the work is quite

often over time. The head of the planning team tried to analyze this problem and sought to improve

the forecasting performance by using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative

approach includes detailed observation of the planning process to find out the constraints ever,

followed by a literature study to define effective and efficient improvement methods. At the stage

of problem formulation, a method of thinking in the Theory of Constituency called the Current

Reality Tree (CRT) is used to understand the causes and effects of a series of problems in order

to formulate the root cause, further designing the system improvements.

The main problems faced are time constraints, manual work system, and found disintegrated

mine-mill model. Through a series of meetings, the team decided to create an alternative planning

system called Mine Planning Interactive (MPI). This system can expedite the planning simulation

from more than four hours or even one day to become less than one hour per one scenario.

A quantitative approach was used to verify the MPI performance. With two cases have been

run, variances of the result was estimated about three to five percent. Management has accepted

to use MPI to run multiple cases study if any, and to use it side by side with the current

conventional. However, this system has not yet perfect. There is still chance to improve it, for

instance it needs to integrate the equipment hour’s calculation also, especially the truck hour’s

calculation.
