Description
Summary:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by an increase in blood

glucose levels caused by insulin deficiency in the body. Insulin levels are reduced or insufficient

but the function decreases. Papaya seeds (Carica papaya L.) is one of the plants used empirically

can lower blood glucose levels. This papaya seeds decoction has been used empirically by Pinrang

Regency as a blood-lowering medication. α-amylase and α-glucosidase have been recognized as

theurapeutic targets for reduction of postpradial hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus. This research

was conducted to know the potency of ethanol extract, water extract, and papaya seeds fraction

as α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitor. Research begins with the characterization and screening

of phytochemical of the crude drugs. The crude drugs is extracted by reflux method with ethanol

and water solvent. The extract was characterized and then monitored chromatogram pattern

using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Extract that have a stronger potencial is fractionated use

the Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE) method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water as an

extractant. The results showed that papaya seeds water extract has a strong activity as an α-

amylase inhibitor while ethanol extract has aweak activity as an α-amylase inhibitor. Water

extract and ethanol extract have weak activity as α-glucosidase inhibitor. The water fraction and

ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the fractionation of water extracts exhibit similar strength of

activity to the α-amylase, and both fraction have weak activity as α-glucosidase inhibitor.
