Zr-Curcumin Synthesis as Lewis Acid Catalyst for Acetalization of Benzaldehyde

Zr-curcumin is a Lewis acid catalyst, which is a group of Zr-diketonates. The complex was synthesized through reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with curcumin [(E,E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-one] of 1:3 molar ratio in ethanol at 85 °C for 14 h. Characterizations of t...

Characterizations of the complex were conducted by FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopies. Complex formation was observed from carbonyl vibration, shifting from 1624 cm-1 to 1599 cm-1. The complex served as a Lewis acid catalyst for acetalization of benzaldehyde with metanol. Catalytic activitiy was calculated by gas chromatography using naphthalene as an internal standard. The employment of this zirconium catalyst gave 84% conversion of benzaldehyde at room temperature for an hour reaction. Herein Zr-curcumin complex has been proved to be more efficient than conventional catalyst for acetalization of benzaldehyde. text
