Summary: | Chlorella pyrenoidosa is a promising alternative resource of lutein and zeaxanthin production. Low levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in culture cause expensive production processes. The aim of this study is to increase the productivity of lutein and zeaxanthin in culture through induction of salinity stress. In this research, a kinetic model for lutein and zeaxanthin production was developed based on batch cultivation in 0.9 L bioreactor. Two stage cultivation process was developed to increase lutein and zeaxanthin productivity. Chlorella pyrenoidosa culture was given salinity stress treatment in the form of adding NaCl concentration of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 g L-1 and salinity stress induction on day 0, 7 and 11 of cultivation. Cultivation for 12 days showed that giving salinity stress can increase carotenoid levels in cells but have a negative impact inhibiting growth microalga cells. Under salinity stress condition, Chlorella pyrenoidosa produced up to 9 and 6,7 mg g-1 lutein and zeaxanthin. It also showed that salinity stress conditions are more favorable for carotenoid production with 92.3 and 94.7% increase of lutein and zeaxanthin productivity. |
