Summary: | Kojic acid is uses as a depigmentation agent for skin whitener which is has

minimum side effects on the skin. Kojic acid is difficult to penetrate into the skin

because of its hydrophilic property. The aim of this research was to encapsulate

kojic acid into the liposome structure to improve the penetration of this substance

into the skin. Liposome was prepared by using thin-layer techniques with

phospholipids and cholesterol. Optimization of the formula was made by using

various ratios of phospholipids: cholesterol. The results showed that the best

formula was found from the ratio of phospholipids: cholesterol 1:2. This liposome

had a particle size of 268.3±8.21 nm, polydispersity index of 0.343±0.02 and

efficiency of encapsulation of 70.50± 0.25%. Analysis using Transmission

Electrons Microscope indicated that kojic acid liposome was spherical. Then

several of gel bases such as NaCMC, HPMC, Viscolam, and Carbopol 940 were

used to develop of Kojic acid liposome gel formula. The best gel preparation

obtained from this study was a gel that using Viscolam base with a concentration

of 8%. It had a pH value of 6.37 and a viscosity of 4,200 cps. This gel also had a

better stability compared to other gel after being stored for 7 days at room

temperature and 40

o

C and humidity of 75%. There was no significant change in

pH and viscosity observed from the stability study. The diffusion test of kojic acid

liposome gel through snake skin membrane showed the improvement of kojic

acid penetration compared to kojic acid gel without liposome system. This kojic

acid liposome gel was found to be not irritating the skin.

liposome system. The irritation test results indicate that the kojic acid liposome

gel does not irritate the skin.
