It is located in the

Mahakam Delta. It has been producing oil and primarily gas since 1977. Due to its complex fluvial deltaic

deposition, X Field has over 500 reservoirs. This big number of reservoirs promotes the implementation of

monobore/dual-bore completion in the recent years. X Field currently has hundreds of wells both with

conventional completion and monobore/dual-bore completion. Since X Field is a major gas producer, the most

widely used artificial lift method is gas lift. Permanent Coiled Tubing Gas Lift (PCTGL), which is a

breakthrough in VICO Indonesia since 2010, where the gas is injected through the coiled tubing and the oil is

produced through the annulus between the tubing and the coiled tubing, has been applied in monobore/dualbore

completed wells because this type of completion cannot accommodate the gas lift mandrels. Conventional

Gas Lift (CGL) that uses gas lift mandrels and unloader valves has also been applied to older wells with

conventional completion. Both of these gas lift methods have their own advantages and disadvantages such as:

CGL installation is more expensive than PCTGL, PCTGL is limited to a certain depth of injection whereas CGL

is not, and the flow area in the tubing in PCTGL installed well is smaller than CGL. A thorough evaluation of

oil well performance using PCTGL and CGL has not been conducted in X Field. This evaluation is required to

provide suggestion for VICO Indonesia and the next operator as to which method will give higher recovery.

This study shows that the best gas lift method to apply in monobore/dual-bore wells is PCTGL with coiled

tubing diameter of 1.5” and in conventional completed wells is CGL. text
