Designing anticancer agents based on inorganic compounds has been a trending research in the chemistry and the pharmacology fields. The inorganic compound is expected to be active agent in term of destroying cancerous cell only. One of anticancer agents is the metal complexes with Mannich-base derivative ligands. In this research, the succinimide methoxybenzaldehyde urea (SMBU) is a Mannich-base, which used as the ligand. The SMBU compound has been successfully synthesized from succinimide, 4methoxybenzaldehyde, and urea using MAOS (Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis) method, and characterized using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The 1H NMR spectra of SMBU showed 5 signals related to H atom on the SMBU molecular structure. The SMBU was subsequently used as a ligand for the synthesis of Co(II)-SMBU complex. The yellowish-green product of Co(II)-SMBU complex have been successfully synthesized. The fragmented Co(II)-SMBU compound occured on ESI-MS spectra with m/z value of 389.18. The infrared spectra of Co(II)-SMBU showed similar peaks compared with the infrared spectra of SMBU ligands. The charge transfer on Co(II)-SMBU complex was observed on the UV-Visible spectra. The magnetic moment of the Co(II)-SMBU was 1.97 BM, which indicated the complex has the low spin configuration. The DNA cleavage result showed that Co(II)-SMBU complex was able to cleave DNA via oxidative mechanism. The optimum concentration of the Co(II)-SMBU is at 25 uM. The results indicated that Co(II)-SMBU complex is a potential anticancer agent.<p align="justify"> text
