Summary: | Thn purpose of the research described in this thesis was to determine the factors affecting the use of existing footbridges in Bandung. To achieve this objective, survey were carried out at the periods of peak demand at twelve footbridge throughout Bandung. It was found that use of the footbridges, as a proportion of total pedestrian crossing demand, was variable but generally low. Analysis showed that qualitative factors the factors which were the principal determinants of the use of footbridges, in particular, themaintenance and design of the bridges, and also whether or not they were located near shcools. Another factor found to affect utilization was the presence of a median in the centre of the road. Bridges at locations with a median generally showed lower utilization. Several factors which were expected to affect utilization were found not to be generally important. These included the ratio of travel: times of pedestrians on the bridges to travel times of pedes trians crossing beneath them; traffic flows; traffic speeds; carriageway widths; and one or two-way direction of traffic. It appeared that most pedestrians chose to use the ground route to cross the road because it was faster. This consideration seemed generally to be of more importance than the greater safety provided by the footbridges. Surveys at the one footbridge with pedestrian barriers on the sidewalk suggested that the commonly recommended method of forcing pedestrians to use. footbridges by constructing sidewalk barriers, may not be successful in Bandung |
