Summary: | Abstract: The potential of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) infected with mycorrhiza as a 134Cs phytoremediator on the ground was evaluated by a green house scale experiment. Experiments were conducted by comparing the growth and the phytoremediation capabilities of mycorrhizal infected sunflower with the non mycorrhizal infected sunflower on 134Cs contaminated soil and noncontaminated soil. Mycorrhiza increased growth in the stems, roots and dry weight of the sunflower significantly. Sunflower uptake on134Cs radioactivity is 50% largeron mycorrhizal infected sunflower. However, transfer factor value in mycorrhizal infected sunflowerdid not increase and it appears that mycorrhiza inhibits the translocation of 134Cs from root to shoot because the value of its translocation factor is significantly smaller than the non-mycorrhizal treatment. The time taken to achieve the MDC (1 Bq/kg soil) of soil concentration by mycorrhizal treatment is 28 years 11 months 2 weeks, without mycorrhiza 29 years 6 months 3 weeks and with decay only 30 years 9 months |
