Description
Summary:As in the case of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), primary reference standards for national

need are still supplied from import. The aim of this study was to obtain candidate of ibuprofen

primary reference standards as an effort to initiate national self reliance in preparing and supplying

reference standards. Ibuprofen pharmaceutical grade was purified by recrystallization method in

several organic solvents and the purified product was characterized using thin layer

chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, FTIR spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic

resonance spectroscopy, and determination of melting point, loss on drying, residue on ignition, as

well as titrimetric assay. The study showed that hexane was the most suitable solvent for ibuprofen

purification. Based on overall characterization results, it was concluded that the purified ibuprofen

fullfiled the purity criteria as candidate of primary reference standards and its assigned value was

99,880 %.
