Description
Summary:PT X is a manufacturing company that produces plastic-based products, such as net and rope. There are 5 colors variances and 4 differing sizes of rope produced. The production process consists of 6 workstations and the overall process in the company uses the flow shop concept, in which the flow of production for all the products follows same production process. In meeting consumers’ demand, the company uses make-to-order system.

In the current condition, the company does not have structured method in order to calculate and schedule productions. As the result, the reoccurring of delay for delivery of goods are inevitable. The average makespan in the production process during 2017 is 62.08 days. Based on these problems, design of production scheduling in PT X will be proposed in order to minimize makespan, minimize tardiness and meet consumer demand.

The proposed design will use two theoretical scheduling methods with objective to minimizing makespan and minimize tardiness, namely Campbell, Dudek and Smith algorithms, the Shortest Processing Time (SPT) and Earliest Due Date (EDD) rules. The required inputs are the data of production process time for each work station and production process flow. Based on these input data, the calculation, scheduling and calculation prototype was done using Microsoft Excel-Macro. The design of the solution consists of 5 alternatives: scheduling with pure CDS algorithm, scheduling with CDS algorithm and SPT rules by grouping jobs based on 2 sizes of rope, 3 sizes, and 4 sizes and scheduling with EDD rules.

The calculation done by using the proposed methods resulted in minimum maximum tardiness of 11,06 days, average makespan of 38,94 days dan the minimum makespan of 38 days that is resulted from scheduling with pure CDS algorithm and scheduling with CDS algorithm and SPT rules by grouping jobs based on 2 sizes of rope. Therefore, the proposed scheduling method to be implemented by PT X is scheduling with pure CDS algorithm as this, proposed solution is proven to yield better results from existing condition.
