Description
Summary:Reaction of toluene with iodine in the presence of concentrated nitric acid followed by oxidation

with potassium permanganate had been carried out. The aim of this research was to study the

possibility of electrophylic aromatic substitution by iodine in the presence of nitric acid

as reagent. In the first step, toluene, iodine and concentrated nitric acid were refluxed at 85 °C for

15 hours resulted in orange liquid and yellowish solid products. After separation by filtration,

the two products were subsequenly oxidized by potassium permanganate under basic condition

which resulted in two while solid products with the yield of 13.4% and 2.3%, respectively.

The two products were characterized by chromatographic, spectroscopic and color reaction

methods as well as melting point determination. However the identity of the two products still

cannot be determined.
