An alternative therapy from natural sources was needed to minimize <br /> <br /> the risk. Turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.) as well as propolis showed <br /> <br /> gastroprotective effect. This study aimed to determine gastroprotective effect of <br /> <br /> turmeric and propolis ethanolic extracts in fixed dose combination (FDC). <br /> <br /> Turmeric and propolis ethanolic extracts were formulated with pharmaceutical <br /> <br /> excipients to form three types of FDC. FDCs were given to ethanol-induced ulcer <br /> <br /> animal model. Then, animals were sacrificed and the stomach were isolated for <br /> <br /> macroscopic and microscopic examination. The results showed that FDC I, FDC <br /> <br /> II and FDC III significantly protected the stomach from ethanol-induced ulcer <br /> <br /> (p<0.05) based on number of ulcer, severity of ulcer, total area and percentage <br /> <br /> area of ulcer, and ulcer index. Percentage of protection from the greatest were FDC <br /> <br /> III (73.67%), FDC II (70.53%), and FDC I (47.83%). Result from macroscopic <br /> <br /> examination was in line with histology examination which showed that FDC I, FDC <br /> <br /> II and FDC III prevented gastric submucosal and mucosal disruption. No <br /> <br /> differences among FDC I, FDC II, and FDC III observed based on number of ulcer, <br /> <br /> severity of ulcer, total area and percentage area of ulcer, and ulcer index. In <br /> <br /> conclusion, FDC I, FDC II, and FDC III had gastroprotective effect in ethanolinduced ulcer model as shown in macroscopic and microscopic examination, with <br /> <br /> the most potent effect shown by FDC III. <br /> text
