In 2020, the number of Indonesia startup predicted will reach 13.000 startups. However, based on data from one of local venture capital, East Venture, the number of start up in Indonesia is decreasing 23% in the second quarter of 2017. It is quite reasonable that Indonesia startup decrease because of many startup is get failure. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Bureau of Labor Statistics (2013), Business Employment Dynamics, defined that startup will have a few relatively volatile years. After startup success to survive in that volatile years, the survival rates will flatten out. And the Bureau of Labor Statistics also defined that 50 percent of startup do not survive in their first 5 years. And the startup which can not survive in their volatile years can get failure. Carmen Nobel defined the startup failure into three categories and every category has their own rate of failure. The biggest rate for the failure is if the failure reflects the non-achievement of the targeted goals and the rate is 90-95%. Those failure happen because of various reasons. According to an article from Statistic Brain Research Institute (2017), the biggest rate is 46 % of failure because lack of competence. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of the competence to the job performance in a bag industry startup. It will be important to reach the main goal of the startup, which is the successfulness. If the owner of the startup want to have a successful business it means that the startup must be able to grow properly. Thereafter, the findings from this research will be used as a company guideline for setting the competence which needed by the bag industry startup and for finding a team which fits with the competence. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method, the specific method is grounded theory. The researcher collected the data through semi-structured interview to the homogeneous group, which is the owner, founder, or CEO of the bag industry startup which already survive more than 5 years. The interview and the analysis did simultaneously until the data saturated and for this research, after interviewed and analysed from 6 (six) interviewees, the data already saturated. All of the data were transcribed and coded sentence by sentence. Then, after the data saturated, the researcher categorized it. The researcher followed the model for grounded theory which given by Strauss and Corbin (1998) for finding the relationship for this study. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Competence consists of three key components, those are knowledge, skill, and attitude. The result from the analysis of the research shows that three components of competence is influenced into the job performance but it is not directly. It also influenced by other factor which can be called as context and interve condition. Then, in this research, there are two phenomenons which arise, those are: (1) adding the team and looking for the third party and (2) developing the current competence by self learning, training, looking to role model and controlling. Afterwards, from the interview result, from those three key components, the most important things which should have by the personnel in running business in bag indutry is having the good attitude because it is the most effected into the job performance. For the next research, it is highly recommended for doing the research with the quantitative method for finding the accurate percentage about the influence of the competence to job performance in bag industry startup. text
