Description
Summary:Torbangun (Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng.) has been known to the public about its effect

in increasing breast milk production. Torbangun leaves contain abundant nutrients and

compounds, including flavonoid and phenolic compounds. In North Sumatera, torbangun leaves

have been consumed for generations by breastfeeding mothers in traditional ways. The use of

torbangun leaves can be increased by making dry extracts of torbangun leaves and milling the crude

drugs of torbangun leaves. The purpose of milling is to modify the particle size using ball mill

method, while dry extract of torbangun leaves is made using the spray drying method. In this study,

extracts from the crude drug which have been milled using the ball milling method have lower

flavonoid content (10.03 ± 0.04 g QE/100 g extracts) and higher phenolic content (11.77 ± 0.49 g

GAE/100 g extracts) than extracts from the crude drug which have not undergone a milling process.

In addition, spray drying temperature and maltodextrin concentration had a significant effect

(p<0.05) on moisture content, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and bulk density of

dried extract of torbangun leaves. Moisture content, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid

content decreased with increasing temperature and maltodextrin concentration. Whereas bulk

density decreased with increasing temperature and increased with increasing maltodextrin

concentration. Based on the result of optimization using the Response Surface Methodology

method, the most optimal condition of spray dry was achieved at a temperature of 182.83o C with

maltodextrin concentration of 1% (w/w). At these optimum conditions, the expected quality of dry

extracts from torbangun leaves are low water content and bulk density, but high total phenolic and

flavonoid content.
