Fabrication of Ammonia Gas Detector Using Curcumin As A Base Indicator

Ammonia gas is one of the gases that are harmful to humans and the environment. However, most ammonia gas detectors circulating in the community have limitations, such as its size, high cost, and harmful to the environment. Curcumin, a dye in turmeric, has a structure that can cause a change in colo...

Curcumin, a dye in turmeric, has a structure that can cause a change in color from yellow to red when reacting with an alkaline environment. This study aims to use curcumin as the basic indicator for an ammonia gas detector.

In this study curcumin was extracted by disolving turmeric in 96% ethanol solution with weight percentage of 1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, and 9 % w/w. The method of extraction is performed by heating and filtering the mixture of tumeric and ethanol to obtain the curcumin extract. The curcumin extract obtained was then tested with UV-VIS and FTIR spectroscopy to determine its purity.

In this study, the highest yield and purity were obtained from curcumin extraction with weight percentage of 1 % w/w. The ammonia gas detector that has been fabricated is then tested with different concentrations of ammonia gas. From the results of studies of ammonia gas detector with curcumin as indicator, it can be concluded that this detector is sensitive enough to detect ammonia gas. text
