Summary: | One of the tropical marine microalgae that has the potential to produce large amounts of fatty acids is

Cyclotella striata TBI. This study aimed to isolate palmitoleic acid from C. striata TBI biomass and

convert palmitoleic acid through metathesis olefin reaction. The research stages included the

preparation of C. striata TBI biomass in large quantities, isolation and purification of lipids from

biomass, identification of total fatty acid from lipid C. striata TBI, separation of palmitoleic acid from

total fatty acid, and conversion of palmitoleic acid through metathesis olefin reaction. The result

showed that the dry cell mass of C. striata TBI obtained from cultures of 1500 L with an initial

density of 500000 cells/mL for 8, 9, and 10 consecutive days was 1.474, 1.396, and 0.1393 kg. Dry

cell of C. striata TBI contains 15% (w/w) lipid. Lipid of C. striata TBI contains 8.8% (w/w) total

fatty acid which 13.6% (w/w) of its mass is palmitoleic acid. The content of palmitoleic acid isolated

from total fatty acid with acetone solvent 0.5%, 5%, and 10%, respectively 7.01%, 3.01%, and 0.57%.

GC-FID chromatogram showed that the peak of palmitoleic acid at 16 min retention time was not

appeared after olefin metathesis reaction, and a new peak appeared at 32 min retention time. This

indicates that the conversion of palmitoleic acid occurs. |
