Mount Sahu is the part of Halmahera volcanic arc that extend through NE arm and islands on the west part of the NW arm. The aim of the research is to determine the mineralogy of Mount Sahu’s volcanic rocks, to determine magma characteristics (affinity, pressure, temperature), and to determine the
magma evolution of Mount Sahu. The methods of this research include the thin section observation and examination for mineral chemistry using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) – EDS (Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer). The products of Mount Sahu's eruptions consist of pyroclastic and lava. Relative from the oldest to the youngest, Qvsh rock unit consists of tuff, pumice, obsidian, breccia, and lava; Qvsh1 rock unit consists of tuff, pumice, obsidian, breccia, and lava; Qlsh rock unit
consists of pyroclastic breccia and aglomerate; Qvsh2 rock unit consists of tuff, breccia, and lava. Mineral chemistry conclude the magma affinity as calc-alkaline and tectonic setting of island arc. Magma evolution of Mount Sahu started with magma ascend through main crater formed andesite pyroxene Qvsh with temperature between 800-1100oC and pressure 2,2-5,4 kbar. Injection of new magma occured forming basalt olivine Qvsh. Basalt olivine Qvsh formed at temperature between 1320-1390 oC and pressure < 5 kbar. After, another process of injection of new magma started, creating magma with more basaltic composition. Magma
formed basalt olivine Qvsh1 at temperature between 1340-1405oC and pressure <5 kbar. Then, basalt olivine Qvsh2 formed at temperature between 1340 oC and pressure < 5 kbar.
text |
