Summary: |
Phenolic antioxidants is synthetic antioxidants which is used widely in many application including food industry, cosmetics and materials. In this research, we have successfully synthesized antioxidants derived from phenol and hydroxyanisole by using industrial grade crude C4 as the source of electrophilic butyl. The reaction conducts under reflux condition in crude C4 atmosphere. Both phenol and 4-methoxy phenol converted completely to products with moderate selectivity to isobutene under acidic conditions. Characterization and analysis performed by thin layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC), 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. Further purification of phenol derivative products yielded two pure components namely 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol (18.7%) and 2-tert-butyl-4-sec-butyl phenol (7.2%), while the purification of hydroxyanisole derivative products gave 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxy phenol (20.4%). GC Chromatogram showed that phenol derivative with tert-butyl group were the major components of the products. The antioxidant activity of pure compounds and the reaction mixture showed that all of the product compound is a powerful antioxidant (IC50 <50 ppm).
|
