Summary: | Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius, L.) is one type of plant typical of South Sulawesi

which contains a chemical compound of Hydroxysafflor yellow A pigment

suspected to have activity in stimulating hair growth through stimulation of the

production of VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) types of cytokines

produced by endothelial cells that play a role in the process of angiogenesis. The

purpose of this study was to formulate extract of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius

L.) in the form of proniosome hair tonic to increase penetration active substances

into the hair follicles. Proniosom preparation using the Slurry Method technique.

Formula optimization using variations of maltodextrin concentration of (a) 50

mg, (b) 100 mg, (c) 150 mg, (d) 200 mg, variations in extract concentration (a) 80

mg, (b) 90 mg and (c) 100 mg with of a span 60 and cholesterol in ratio 1:1 in

250 μMol. The results showed that the Hydroxysafflor yellow A content in

safflower ethanol extract was 24.27% ± 0.63. The best formula uses maltodextrin

content of 200 mg, with total lipids (span 60 & cholesterol) of 1:1 with a particle

size of 336,6±24,0 nm, polydispersity index of 0,336±0,06, and percent

encapsulation efficiency of 98,146±0,039. Analysis using the Transmission

Electron Microscopy (TEM) indicate that proniosomes was spherical.

Proniosomes are developed in hair tonic preparations using glycerin carriers.

Stability test showed that there were significant change of vesicle size (P <0.05)

until the 7th day at 25°C and 11th day at 40°C, polydispersity index was stable at

25°C and 40°C until 14 days. Irritation test showed that proniosom hair tonic

preparations of safflower extract (Carthamus tinctorius L.) did not irritate the

skin with a primary irritation index of 0.Proniosom hair tonic activity test for 14

obtained data on the increase in hair length in the test area was 30-36% longer

than the control (P <0.05), hair weights 4x more than the group without

treatment. The results show hair tonic proniosom significantly has hair growth

activity.
