TOXICITY EVALUATION OF SLUDGE FROM WWTP OF THE CIGARETTE INDUSTRY TO RATS (Rattus norvegicus) AND MICE (Mus musculus)

One of the problems of the cigarette industry is a solid waste generated from the wastewater treatment plant. Solid waste is also called sludge. Solid waste is also called sludge. A sludge is resulted from a coagulation and flocculation process. Cigarette industrial wastewater treatment of PT. X produced in relatively big amount of sludge (approximately 15,000 kg/month), it was not tested yet on security level. Some physics and chemistry tests are not sufficient enough to assess a pollution impact for living organisms; therefore, biomonitoring such as toxicity test is required. Toxicity test were applying to a mice and rats as an animal test that consists of a Test Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP), an acute test and a subchronic test. The results of chemical test were compared descriptively with a quality standard of TCLP (issued by the USEPA and PP. No. 85/1999), and the acute toxicity refers LD50 value (issued by the PP. No. 85/1999) while the subchronic toxicity testing was analyzed statistically using a one-way ANOVA method (?=0.05). This study showed that the heavy metals concentration on the sludge of PT. X was very low concentrations regarding to the maximum concentration standard (PP No. 18/1999 jo the PP No. 85/1999). The acute toxicity test found that the dose variation of sludge did not cause a death for rats and mice. However the sludge infusion with a dose of 500 mg/kgbw caused a decreasing of a mice’s body weight and a dose of 5000 mg/kgbw caused a decreasing of a rats’s body weight. In addition, the subchronic test indicated that a sludge exposure with a dose of 50 mg/kgbw to the female mices were able to increase a degeneration and a necrosis of kidney and liver cell in which significantly different from controls. text
