STUDY OF ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM EMPTY FRUIT BUNCHES BY SOLID STATE FERMENTATION WITH Trichoderma reesei AND Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Ethanol is a bio-fuel that can be used as an alternative to fossil fuel substitution. Ethanol can be made from materials that contain sugar polymer such as starch and cellulose. Empty Fruit bunches (EFB) can be chosen to be the raw material because it contains cellulose and its use does not compete...

Ethanol can be made from materials that contain sugar polymer such as starch and cellulose. Empty Fruit bunches (EFB) can be chosen to be the raw material because it contains cellulose and its use does not compete with the use as a food source. EFB not only contain cellulose but also lignin (20,2%). EFB pretreatment with NaOH 4% (1:20) during 30 minutes at 121oC can decrease lignin content to 2,11 %. Optimization of rice bran addition as nitrogen source (15 %, 25%,30%, and 35%) has been conducted in solid state with Trichoderma reesei. The highest concentration of reducing sugar (4,12mg/g substrate) obtained on the addition of 30% rice bran and gave 1.0998 U/g substrate CMCase activity . Ethanol fermentation from EFB has been conducted via solid state fermentation using mix culture of Trichoderma reesei (107spore/g substrate) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (107 cell/g substrate). Four variation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae inoculation time were evaluated in this study, Saccharomyces cerevisiae inoculation at first day (A), second day (B) , sixth day in aerobic conditions and inoculation of S. cerevisiae at second day fermentation in limited aerobic condition (D). The results of treatment with Saccharomyces cerevisiae after inoculation second day with the limited aerob condition produce ethanol most of the high 8.0213 mg / g substrate on the eight day of incubation time. text |
