Description
Summary:Sumatra is an island that has a high lightning strike intensity each year. This is due to the fact that Sumatra Island is in the tropics and is in the Monsoon Wind path so the conditions for Cumulonimbus Clouds are easily fulfilled, namely up-draft, aerosols and humid air. The Sumatra 500 kV transmission line and substation are being planned by the Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). Lightning disturbances in the transmission line are divided into three, namely direct strikes on the tower, ground wire and phase wire. Direct strikes on the tower and ground wire can cause backflashover. While direct strikes on phase wires can cause shielding failure. Lightning disturbances in substations are divided into two, namely travelling waves from the transmission line and direct strikes at the substation. Travelling waves from the transmission line can cause flashover. While direct strikes on substations can cause backflashover and shielding failure. Therefore we need a lightning protection system in the transmission line and substation. The solution for direct strikes on the tower and substation is the extended mast terminal. The solution for direct strikes on ground wire and phase wire is a transmission line arrester. The solution for travelling wave from the transmission line is insulation coordination.
