However, salt currently produced by small-scale home industries in Indonesia still does not meet the standards of high quality food or pharmaceutical grade salt. This research was conducted to establish an appropriate method for production of pharmaceutical grade NaCl candidate at laboratory scale. Krosok local salt was purified by means of the following processes: filtration, addition of adsorbent and precipitating substances, pH adjustment and recrystallization. Activated carbon and sodium carbonate were used as adsorbent and precipitating substances, respectively, while sodium hydroxide and or hydrochloric acid were used for pH adjustment. The purified salt was tested for specifications according to procedures describe in the 5 th edition of Indonesian Pharmacopoeia. The results showed that the purified salt meets the requirements for calcium, magnesium, iron, heavy metals ion, and volatile organic compound contaminant with the concentrations of 0.91, 20.39, 0.45, below 5, and below 50 ppm, while barium, ferrocyanide, iodide and bromide contaminants were not identified. However the purified salt did not meet the requirements for pH of solution, sulfate and aluminium contaminants, which were 7, more than 150 and 4.05 ppm, respectively. Based on overall results, it was concluded that the purified salt does not meet the requirements as pharmaceutical grade salt and hence the proposed production method should be further improved, especially its purification method. text
