Description
Summary:This study aims to review multi-actor innovation in the music industry, develop a preliminary conceptual framework from literature, gain and compare empirical insights from respondents in the field through interviews with the preliminary conceptual framework, and validate the revised framework by comparing the results from the revised results with the empirical findings from the field. Through an abductive paradigm, this study carries out an exploratory qualitative case study in Bandung and Jakarta areas in Indonesia by using a preliminary conceptual framework derived from literature as the basis of rival analyses. Then, various informants and experts with competences in the musical business field in Indonesia, mostly from the upstream/production side, are interviewed as the key sources of information. Through exploratory interviews, the study compares the initial conceptual framework regarding the creation, delivery, and capture in the market. The revised framework is then validated through explanatory study. This study has extended and advanced the understandings relating to the co-innovation practices in the context of the creative industry, particularly music business. The key output of this dissertation are (1) state-of-the-art review of how various actors innovate in music business (2) preliminary theoretical model of co-innovation in the world music business adapted from various literature, (3) framework regarding ways in which co-innovation is practised in the music business by using the preliminary theoretical model with empirical findings from the field, and (4) validation of the proposed revised framework through explanatory analysis. The proposed framework in this study is unique as it has been able to integrate the previous literature in describing how co-innovation is practised in the music business.
