Summary: | The immune system is a system to protect the body from infectors. Currently many diseases related
to the immune system such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and AIDS. Therefore, drugs are needed
to overcome diseases related to the immune system, which is known as immunomodulators.
Immunomodulators can be obtained from plants as carried out in this study. Moringa leaves are
traditionally used to maintain our health. The purpose of this study was to examine the
immunomodulatory effects of moringa leaves extract on Swiss Webster mice. Two kinds of extracts
were prepared, i.e., ethanol extract that obtained by maceration method and ethyl acetate extract
produced by reflux method. Two doses of the extracts were test i.e., 75 and 150 mg/kg mice body
weight. Ethyl acetate extract was also tested in the nanosuspension dosage form. Effect on immune
responses was studied through carbon clearance tests to determine effects on nonspecific immune
response, antibody titers and cytokine levels (IFN-?and IL-2) to determine effects on specific
immune response. The results showed that ethanol extract at a dose of 75 mg/kg bw and both
doses of ethyl acetate extract (75 and 150 mg/kg bw) showed immunostimulation effects
(phagocytic index > 1.2). The nanosuspension of the ethyl acetate extract showed a stronger
immunostimulation effect (phagocytic index> 1.5) than ethyl acetate extract. Both doses of ethanol
extract, ethyl acetate, and nanosuspension of ethyl acetate extract have no effect on humoral
immune response and the production of IFN-?and IL-2.
