symptoms (EPS). Trihexyphenidyl (THP) is an anticholinergic to treat EPS that is used as a
preventive and curative treatment. This study was aimed to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis
of THP as a preventive and curative treatment to treat EPS for schizophrenia patients in West Java
Provincial Mental Hospital. There were 256 patients that fulfill the criteria, of which 72 patients
were included. Medical record assessment was done to collect data on demography of the
patients and the prescription pattern. The patients were then categorized based on the
antipsychotic therapy and the usage of THP to treat EPS. The EPS score determined by a

There were two modes of treatment of THP to treat EPS, curative (65.3%) and preventive (34.7%).
The mostly used antipsychotic was 2-drug combination of first generation antipsychotic-second
generation antipsychotic (FGA-SGA) with curative accounted for 23.6% and preventive for 11.1%.
The lowest ICER score was found in 3-drug combination of FGA-SGA with the consequence of
highest financial lost by the use of THP as preventive treatment. Whereas, the highest ICER score
was found with the monotherapy of FGA that indicates the lowest financial lost with the use of
THP as preventive treatment. Taken together, the results indicate that THP has been used without
taken into consideration the class of antipsychotic drugs used.
