Description
Summary:Dibutyl phthalate is one of low molecular weights synthetic phthalic acid esters. Dibutyl phthalate can be used in the nail polish as a plasticizer, while in perfumes as perfume fixative agent. Based on chronic toxicity studies in animals, dibutyl phthalate shows toxicity toward developmental and reproductive system. The use of dibutyl phthalate in cosmetics is restricted in various countries, including Indonesia. Therefore, a method to determine dibutyl phthalate in cosmetic products is needed. This study was aimed to develop a suitable method for determining the levels of dibutyl phthalate in nail polish and perfume products. The analyte in samples was extracted using methanol, then the solutions were analyzed using Gas Chromatography equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (FID), DB-5MS® capillary column, and nitrogen as a carrier gas. The obtained optimum condition was 300o C for injector and detector, gradient elution system was perfomed with the initial temperature of 55°C (0.5 min), and raised at a rate of 30°C/min to 200o C, then 20°C/min to 300o C (5 min). Method showed a linear range of 100 ?300 mg/L with correlation coefficient of 0.999 and coefficient variance of 1.236%. Limits of detection and quantification were 8.16 mg/L and 24.73 mg/L, respectively. Relative standard deviation of intra-day precision determination was 2.195%, meanwhile relative standard deviation of inter-day precision determination were 1.44% on the first day, 2.81% on the second day, and 0.9% on the third day. The recovery of accuracy determination were 97.237 to 100.785 % for nail polish, and 99.045 to 100.699 % for perfume. The result of 11 marketed nail polish and 11 marketed perfume products showed none of the sample contain dibutyl phthalate. In conclusion, the developed method could be used for dibutyl phthalate analysis.
